A 20-Minute Online Visibility Audit for Australian Small Businesses

Most small business owners know they should be doing something about their online visibility. The problem is rarely a lack of motivation. It's a lack of clarity about where to start.

This audit gives you that clarity. Work through each section, note what's done and what's missing, and you'll finish with a clear, prioritised action list. The whole thing takes about 20 minutes.

Before you start: run a quick search test

Open a private browser window and search for your main service and location. For example: 'plumber Ballarat' or 'bookkeeper Cairns'. Note where your business appears, or whether it appears at all. This gives you a baseline before you go through the checklist.

Section 1: Your Google Business Profile

  • Is your profile set up and claimed? If not, go to business.google.com now, that's the first priority.

  • Is every field completed: business name, address or service area, phone, website, categories, hours, and services?

  • Have you added at least 5 photos, including your logo, workspace or vehicle, and examples of your work?

  • Have you written a business description that includes what you do and where you do it?

  • Have you posted an update or offer in the last 30 days?

  • Have you responded to every review on your profile, including older ones?

Section 2: SEO citations and directory listings

  • Are you listed in Google Business Profile?

  • Are you listed in Magnify Your Biz? (magnifyyourbiz.com, 60 days free right now)

  • Are you listed in Yellow Pages Australia, True Local, and Hotfrog?

  • Is your business name, address, and phone number exactly the same across every listing?

  • Are you listed in any industry-specific directories relevant to your sector?

  • Do you have a live backlink from at least three quality Australian websites pointing to yours?

The NAP consistency check

Open two or three of your existing directory listings side by side and compare your business name, address, and phone number on each one. They should be identical, character for character. If they're not, update them before adding any new listings. Inconsistency across citations creates doubt in Google's ranking algorithm.

Section 3: Your website

  • Does your homepage mention what you do and where in the first two paragraphs?

  • Does your page title include your main service and your location?

  • Is your website mobile-friendly? Check at search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly

  • Is your site speed score above 50? Check at pagespeed.web.dev

  • Are your image file names descriptive rather than default camera names like IMG_4521.jpg?

  • Does your site have an SSL certificate? (Your URL should start with https, not http)

Section 4: Reviews and social proof

  • Do you have at least 5 Google reviews?

  • Have you received at least one new review in the past 60 days?

  • Do you have reviews on your directory listings as well as Google?

  • Have you responded to every review on every platform?

How to score yourself

Scoring guide

Count how many items you ticked.

18 to 22 means you have a strong foundation and you're in a good position to focus on incremental improvements.

12 to 17 means you have solid progress with a few gaps worth addressing in the next few weeks.

Below 12 means there are meaningful visibility opportunities that are well within reach and relatively quick to action.

What to fix first

Don't try to action everything at once. Work in this order:

  • First: Set up or complete your Google Business Profile if it's missing or incomplete

  • Second: Build your citation profile by getting listed in quality directories

  • Third: Ask your best clients for Google reviews and reviews on your directory listings

  • Fourth: Check your website speed and mobile experience and address any major issues

  • Fifth: Review the keywords on your main website pages and add location and service language where it's missing

Each step makes the ones after it more effective. A complete Google Business Profile supported by consistent directory listings and backed by genuine reviews is a strong foundation for local search visibility. These don't require a big budget. They require time and consistency.
