Is Your Business Easy to Find on Google and in AI Search? Here's How to Check
Anyone can find you if they already know you exist. The better question is whether a stranger searching for what you do, in your area, would find you. And "searching" now includes asking ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews who to call.
'Reliable Electrician Geelong.' 'Recommended Bookkeeper in Tauranga.' 'Best Dog groomer Brisbane.' 'Who's a good accountant in Christchurch for tradies?' If a potential customer typed any of those right now, where would your business appear? Would it be named at all?
For most Aussie and Kiwi businesses, the answer is: not where it should be. The reason is rarely the quality of the business. Usually the signals that help search engines and AI tools recommend you are missing.
How Google and AI tools decide who to show
Google is a recommendation engine. So are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and the AI Overviews at the top of Google. They look for businesses they can verify and trust, then put them forward. There are three layers to being found:
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) gets you ranking in search results.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) gets you showing up in featured snippets, AI summaries and voice search answers.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) gets you named when an AI tool writes a recommendation.
They share the same foundations. Trust signals come from:
How many places online mention your business consistently
How many trusted websites link back to yours
How many reviews you have, and how recent they are
Whether your Google Business Profile is complete and active
Whether your website answers the questions people ask, clearly and quickly
None of this needs a big budget, SEO guru, or a web developer. It needs time, consistency and knowing what to prioritise.

A quick way to see where you stand
Grab your phone (or a friend's) and try these three checks.
Google it. Open a private browser window and search your main service plus your location, like 'Accountant Sunshine Coast' or 'Graphic designer Wellington'. Scroll the first page. Check the map pack (the three businesses shown with a map), the organic results and any directory listings.
Check the AI Overview. Look at the AI summary at the top of the results. Is your business mentioned?
Ask the AI tools. Type 'Who are the best [your service] in [your town]?' into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. See who gets named.
If you're not showing up, that's useful information. It tells you exactly where to start.
The four gaps that cause most visibility problems
In most cases, a small business that isn't showing up in local search is missing one or more of these three things.
1. No consistent directory presence
When your business name, address and phone number appear the same way across multiple trusted websites, Google and AI tools get more confident that you're legitimate and relevant. These mentions are called SEO citations. Most businesses have one or two. The ones getting recommended often have ten or fifteen, all with matching details.
2. An incomplete or forgotten Google Business Profile
This is the most powerful free local visibility tool you have. It feeds the map pack, and AI tools draw on it when they recommend local businesses. A complete, active profile consistently outperforms a neglected one.
3. Very few or no reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest ranking signals, and AI tools pay attention to them too. A business with twenty recent reviews will usually outrank a competitor with two, even if the competitor has the better website. Getting more is mostly a matter of asking at the right moment.
4. A website that doesn't answer the questions people are asking
AI tools love clear answers. Add an FAQ page (even better, include a few FAQs on every page on your website!), use the questions your customers actually ask as headings, and answer each one in a sentence or two. That's AEO and GEO in action, and it helps your regular SEO too.
